Malaysia inflation picks up in August , slightly above forecast.
Malaysia's consumer price index in August edged up to 3.1 percent from a year earlier due to sustained price increases in household expenses despite lower fuel cost.

Inflation in August was slighty above a 3.0 percent median forecast by economists in a Reuters poll , but less than 3.3 percent in July.

Inflation has picked up considerably since a 6 percent cpnsumption tax went into effect in April , but economists expect prices to moderate as fuel costs remain low and the festive season of Eid al-Fitr ended in mid-August.

What caused the drop in the ringgit's value?

There are several combination factors caused the drop in the ringgit's value. Firstly , the lower value of oil. As oil is one of Malaysian's main exports , the declining price of Brent crude oil of 38% from its June 2014 high is affecting the currency.

Malaysia's 1MDB debts have gained global attention and had affected confidence in ringgit. Former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin was one of those who blamed the 1MDB financial debacle. However , those defending 1MDB also blamed the former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's criticism of the government for the weakening currency.

Media reports in July 2015 , Prime Minister Najib Razak's personal accounts were involved in the transfer of USD700 million of 1MDB money have caused further weakening of confidence in currency.
